About me

Material ease of use price/worth skills needed immediadiate feedback Ease to connect variety of materials Affordance
Story cubes The physical action of using story diveis quite simple. You throw them just like other dice. Being able to go from pictures to a tinkering idea is more challeging and more dependent on the creative skils from the user than the dice Changing the dice any more drastically than with a marker will likely end with weighted dice making them less useful. This dissuades the user from modifying the dice which is unfortunate for a tinkering material The throwing needs nearly no skill. Using the images to get a story requires more skill There is very clear immediate feedback as you can immediately see what you threw The dice have no connection points making them hard to include in other things. They are simply cubes with nothing to attach The dice are all the same physical material. By combining multiple story dice sets you can get quite a variety in inspiration. The pictures on the dice per set are also already quite distinct They are dice, most people know what to do with dice. This gives them a high afffordance
Arduino starter kit Starting with Arduino is not very simple, even when having some experience there are often still things that need to be checked such as how to connect a specific part or how to code it. The many options for things to connect with their own instructions also makes it less easy to use Arduino boards are expensive making them not something you want to break, however most simple sensors and actuators are quite cheap making it easier to tinker with them Quite a bit of skill needed, both in how to connect parts together, in which pins and in how to program the parts It can take a bit to get feedback from the system as code needs to be updated and then it needs to run before you know if something went well. You don't immediately get feedback if you connect something wrong or such You can connect Arduinos with many sensors and it can be incorporate very well in many projects as CreaTers have shown over the years There are many sensors and actuators, however you are always busy with coding and wires taking a bit of the variety away Whan looking at a Arduino kit it is not immediately clear what to do, however the cables and pins quite clearly are meant to connect
Grove sensor kit Three students who all have experience with Arduino struggled with understanding the kit so it's not that easy to use at least not at first. It does have nice cables to connect things Arduino boards are expensive making them not something you want to break, and now the sensors are also more expenisive because they are specific to the set Same as Arduino Same as Arduino The kit has taken away Arduinos ability to connect with many things which is unfortunate Same as arduino but there are less sensors/ actuators specifically for this Same as Arduino but a little more clear because the bits are already connected in a way when they aren't punched out yet
LEGO Very easy to use, no skills needed but to connect the bricks Lego bricks connect great together so destroying them is unfortunate but they work so well together often the destruction is not needed For simple lego there is not a lot of skill needed. To build advanced Lego Technic builds mechanical knowledge is needed Very clear feedback if soemthing doesn't connect it won't work Lego is made to connect to other Legos not so much other things however there is a great example of holepunched paper and Lego https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBZO8j5l-SQ There are many Lego bricks which offers much variety but it is all Lego and plastic Lego seems very clear to me but that could be because I've known it my entire life and it is such a well known toy
BYOR Easy to undersatnd with the words/arrows and colours. Along with the clear manual Same as Grove sensor kit Less than the other electrical kits as it is very much plug and play As no programming is needed for simple projects the feedback is very clear. It is made to connect to cardboard so that is nice. I'm unsure if it will connect well to other electrical kits Same as grove kit Easy to undersatnd with the words/arrows and colours
Makedo Theoretically easy to use, however actually getting the screws into the cardboard can be tough The cardboard is very cheap and easy to tinker with. The makedo tools are sturdy making them easy to try things with Some simple tool use but not many skills are needed. Very clear feedback as you can immediately see if soemthing is not working Specifically made to connect to cardboard. Other materials will likely work badly Only really works with cardboard The clear form of farmiliar tools: screws makes the kit easy to understand
